Detection of lactose positive Salmonella is required in food microbiology by the ISO 6579-1 standard.

  • Salmonella (including S. typhi, S. paratyphi A and lactose positive Salmonella) → mauve
  • E. coli → colourless
  • Coliforms, etc → blue
  • Proteus, etc → colourless or inhibited
